Nestled on the ever-charming Portobello Road, Trailer Happiness is a subterranean Tiki party spot that is always up for a wild night fuelled by rummy cocktails. The 70s basement décor is cheeky and cheerful, much like their staff and drinks. So when you’re looking to cut loose, there’s little better than this ode to Polynesia/Tiki-Americana, kitted out with (un)ironic shag carpets and Tretchikoff prints.
If you don’t have a lot of cash to splash, invest in a few overproof cocktails to set you up for the evening. We’re partial to their ultra boozy concoctions like Mr Yellow Belly with Wray & Nephew white rum and jerk and tamarind syrup, or Hell in the Pacific with dark overproof rum, maraschino and pomegranate molasses. If you’re prepared for a hell-hath-no-fury kind of night, order yourself a Don Zombie. This legendary cocktail is a mix of nine rums, velvet falernum, bitters and a dash of absinthe. Hoo-wee, it’s our forever favourite. Want to take a few mates along for the ride? Order it for four and out it comes in a fiery volcano. And for nibbles, there is a short list of dumplings and spring rolls – the kind of treats you’re in the mood for after treading through lava-filled depths.
The party atmosphere is thick on the weekends with DJs throwing up serious throwback hip hop and reggae tunes. The hot and heavy dancing will make you forget all about rainy Londontown just up the stairs. Welcome to island living.
Best Bars tip: Rum fan? Sign up to their Rum Club which meets on the first Monday of every month … you can thank us later (with a Wray & Nephew cocktail perhaps?).
