Tiki, Mexican and Americana are big on the Manchester scene, yet the arrival of Red’s True Barbecue has been more than warmly welcomed – think up to four-hour waits on weekends and no bookings. But don’t let that put you off, it’s worth it – just pop into town, get your name on the list early and carry on with your shopping and errands. Once you’re inside, experience the tribute to the Bible Belt, with fluorescent nuns and confessional booths in the loos (certainly one of the coolest toilets we’ve ever seen).
The cocktail menu makes it easy for you as most drinks recommend a food pairing – so if you’re getting sticky ribs, try the Rosemary Rum Fashioned made with Appleton VX rum and stirred with maple syrup and fresh rosemary. We don’t know what to suggest with the 2,000 calorie glazed donut burger though … a beer perhaps? For food, expect a messy, sticky and saucy experience – with plenty of opportunity to top up with the plethora of sauces on each table.
You can make this a happy family outing during the day or a long rowdy one into the night … and if you misbehave, just go confess your sins in the gents or ladies.
Best Bars tip: We love ourselves a pickleback – a shot of whisky chased with a shot of pickle juice – and since it’s on the menu, why not treat yourself to a Deep South-style digestif?
