The Hemingway is a smart pub sitting pretty on a quiet and residential part of Victoria Park Road. This place has taken the idea of the neighbourhood pub to whole new levels. With standout décor (think tufted armchairs and taxidermy), a sunny garden and hunger-quenching gastro fare — this place might just make you want to move to Hackney … if you haven’t already.
To drink, there’s a healthy choice of whisky and spirits on offer, as well as specialist bottled beers, a range on draught and then a summer cocktail station on the bar — i.e. Aperol Spritz, Americano or Pimms … pick your refreshing poison. To eat, you can swing by any time of day to treat yourself to breakfast, lunch, dinner or a Sunday roast. The open kitchen creates the seasonal menu with items like a 35-day hung Chateaubriand steak (loosen your belts folks), but it’s the homemade Scotch egg that really can’t be missed.
The crowd is a happy mix, from the young trendies to the tried-and-true Hackney locals. All are served with a smile and made to feel this is their home away from home.
Best Bars tip: The plethora of board games available is impressive, so set yourselves up for the day here. Grab a table in the garden, order a drink or two, then it’s time to play.
