Honky Tonk is in-your-face big – from the huge neon signage to the punchy smoky flavours on the menu to the festively fun drinks. With exposed brick interiors, repurposed pipes and typography-covered walls, it brings the modern cool of America to south London.
Start your roll with the beer selection – literally. Here the craft brews come to you on a trolley with knowledgeable staff on hand to advise novices. Or if you can’t choose just one, why not take a trip with a beer flight? If you like your drinks stirred, ask the bartender what barrel-aged cocktails are available – the Orange Old Fashioned is deep with a gently acidulous aftertaste and will match a stack o’ ribs just fine. The real treats are the nibbles though – the Buffalo wings and the home-smoked chicken quesadillas will keep you coming back.
This is great for a bit of mid-week fun, but the Sundowner Terrace is also tops for a summer weekend brunch spot. Plus you can knock your headache out with a visit from the build-your-own Bloody Mary trolley.
Best Bars tip: If you’re staying for a meal, ask the staff about the wheel of fortune. Each table gets a chance at swinging it to win a prize … or be crowned “massive loser” of the day.
