*COPPA has closed for the year … fingers crossed it’ll be back next summer.*
Overlooking London Fields is Hackney’s latest (and possibly hippest) rooftop hangout, COPPA Bar & BBQ, courtesy of the talented folk from LARDO. A charming and colourful space with odes to Italy in the form of finger-licking antipasti and fake lemon vines climbing up the gazebo, this is one of the happiest spots to spend the summer.
If you’ve got a group of six or more, you can book yourself in with a set menu (and don’t fret, the offerings won’t disappoint). Charcuterie is on offer throughout the day, with a light Italian-style brunch on the weekends. And in the evening, dig in to the rosticceria: free range chicken that’s either ‘nduja roasted or infused with rosemary and lemon, plus you get an antipasti side – we say go for the grilled radicchio or fennel and orange salad … does it get any fresher? To drink, these guys have got the season down packed: spritz, spritz and more spritz. While we’re always partial to the Aperol sort, if you want to go more off-piste then try one of the boozy granitas. For those with more bitter inclinations, try the Negroni with a Campari slush, sweet vermouth and gin.
For chillier evenings, try to cuddle into one of the little huts or “capannas” where you can comfortably sit four of your mates — just grab a couple of knitted blankets to throw over your shoulders as well.
Best Bars tip: COPPA is open from 12pm on the weekends as well as bank holidays, so get here early and take your time working through the nibbles while you enjoy the sunshine on the roof.
