This brand new drinking den is the latest establishment in London Road’s surge of regeneration. Along with The Hare & Hounds, Emporium, MEATliquor and a newly-renovated World’s End, Alcampo Lounge is doing much for making this a desirable neck of the woods to have a beverage or two.
The first thing you’ll notice is how huge this place is, particularly on a Monday or Tuesday night when it’s not as crowded as it is on the weekends. It might be big, but it’s far from cavernous. This place almost feels like home with its (often creepy) family photos and portraits nailed across the wallpapered walls, a plentiful supply of comfy vintage armchairs and an array of old-fashioned lamps dotted about the place. This is a quirky, yet welcoming spot — there’s even a bookcase encouraging guests to swap paperbacks.
Booze-wise, there’s a good choice of lagers and a craft beer or two, plus it does a good turn in fruity fun cocktails. Yet this all-day spot is also a good choice for brunch: we like the look of triple-stacked buttermilk pancakes washed down with a vanilla milkshake.
Best Bars tip: Fans of alfresco spaces will approve of the heated terrace out front. Summer to winter outdoors drinking is the way to go.
