After a year-and-a-half pop-up under Hackney’s Off Broadway, Portside Parlour has finally docked its ship on the all too convenient Rivington Street in Shoreditch. You won’t have to go through the loo to get in this time, but the drinks and vibes stay true to the original locale. Expect a narrow and dark New York-style bar with nautical touches, cosy booths and a small back room for an even more intimate drinking experience.
This place has a thing for rum aficionados but will get any booze lover excited. If you want something long, refreshing, sweet yet strong then switch on Autopilot. With Appleton Estate VX, Gosling’s Rum, grapefruit juice, lime and bitters – this is one you’ll find simply too easy to drink. For a rich cocoa straight-up mix, try the Poet with Johnnie Walker Black Label, sherry, chocolate bitters and for that extra punch – a bit of Chartreuse. The nibbles stick close to the ocean with European seafood tapas filling out the menu. Go for the baby octopus terrine and the stuffed zucchini flowers to get your veggie fill.
The tunes are bang on, with those rock songs you can never remember the name of but always love to hear. And with rare rums for sale by the bottle – you’ll be getting into the pirate mood in no time.
Best Bars tip: The kitchen is open until 11pm six nights a week, so you needn’t be shovelling down kebabs after your Shoreditch bar crawl. Just line those bellies nicely here with ever-present rum in hand. Ships a’hoy!
