If you’re a fan of the bubbly stuff and fancy yourself a bit fancy – then it’s time to visit Kettner’s. A Soho staple established in 1867, this bar (attached to a tasty and luxurious restaurant) has recently been revamped – making it a destination in its own right. The mosaic-tiled floors, marble top tables and deep red walls give a gentle nod to the history – Oscar Wilde used to drink here – but the interiors don’t feel dusty or stuffy, instead they are a modern appropriation of the building’s heritage.
To drink, we reckon it’s an obvious choice: champagne. Don’t worry, the pickings ain’t slim. And to get the most bang for your buck, go for the monthly special where you’ll find a discounted price for what is undoubtedly quality bubbles. If you want to mix it up, the Poinsettia is a bestseller with Chambord, pomegranate juice and prosecco. Or if it’s a classic gin Martini you’re after, the staff will knock one out for you as well. To eat, it’s only fitting to go for the oysters – a pairing that stands the test of time.
Whether you’re catching up with the girls, looking for a celebratory drink, or bringing along the gang from work – there’s plenty of space to settle into. If you’ve got enough people, try to book into the skylight nook in the back with its softy and cushy banquettes.
Best Bars tip: Not in the mood for splashing the cash? Then swing by on a Tuesday for the Gin, Fizz and Jazz. Free live tunes and £6 cocktails? Happy Tuesday indeed.
