Occupying a multi-decker space in the heart of Soho is the slick and glossy Chotto Matte. Expect a marriage of Japanese and Peruvian cuisines — aka Nikkei — which also set the tone for the design (think colourful manga murals and punchy furnishings). A staple for the fashion set, this is heavy on styling and is one of those places where you come to see and be seen. So immerse yourself in the dark and sexy vibes of Tokyo.
The drinks stick to Nikkei flavours, playing around with pisco and sake in less than usual ways. We’re not complaining. Grab one of the exotic twists while you bop along to buzzy blaring tunes courtesy of the DJ. Prescribe yourself one of the anti-depressants like the Japajito with sake, mint, shiso and lime. Who can resist a Mojito (in any form)? Or try the Chilcano de Tonka for a pisco and ginger beer delight.
For nibbles, the smoky anticuchos are ideal finger food — try the pork belly with nashi pear and yellow tomato salsa or the slightly adventurous beef heart that will make your heart sing. Plus if you can’t be bothered making a decision, you can order one of the £40-45 tasting menus.
Best Bars tip: Grab a seat by the front of the cocktail lounge on sunnier days and let the passers-by get an eyeful of your frosty cocktails. Or if it’s cooler outside, try to snag a spot by the robata grill … those fiery aromas will get you ready for dinner.
