Under the Stairs

Under the Stairs EdinburghUnder the Stairs is a cosy below-ground spot, though you probably figured that much from the name. Even on your first visit, you’ll feel like this is your home away from home.

If you’re feeling adventurous, try the slightly unusual sounding Beetroot and Wasabi Margarita. A little bit earthy, plenty zesty with just a hint of a kick on the aftertaste — this is one of the best drinks in town (yes you heard us). For our gin loving pals, try Sgt Peppers made with Martin Miller’s gin, cucumber, rhubarb, pink peppercorns and lime. Fresh, juicy and lip licking good. The food takes it up a few more notches with dishes like goat’s cheese and chilli jam filo parcels or heartier fare like the Moroccan spiced lamb tagine with chickpea couscous.

From the flickering fireplace to the mismatched beaten sofas, it is exactly what you want for a casual date night or a weekday catch-up with mates. On the weekends this place packs out — and we’re not surprised.

Best Bars tip: If you pop in between Monday to Friday from 12pm-4pm, there’s serious bang for your buck eating to be had. Get soup and a sandwich for £5.95 — and it’ll taste like momma’s cooking too.
